Music & Me

past...

Music has always been an integral part of my life. From sitting next to my dad as a toddler while he played the Hammond organ at church to singing soprano in my first youth choir as my mom stood out front directing, beautiful melodies were instilled in me. At sixteen, I was elected and served two years as president and lead director of a Gospel community choir. This involved teaching lyrics and harmonies to over 40 singers – ensuring proper enunciation, tone, and pitch. It also consisted of working with the musicians to nail down the best instrumentation and arrangement for each song. How telling of where I would be today.

Gospel music is my first love. As with most first loves, we leave them. And yes, I needed time to explore different genres and other musical possibilities. During my stint in the Army, many opportunities were presented. While stationed in Yongsan, Korea, I became the lead vocalist and only female in a band called Per Chance. We performed Jazz standards and top 40 R&B hits in various nightclubs located at Army, Air Force, and Naval posts and bases to lift morale. At my final duty station, Ft. Campbell, KY, I met a remarkable guitarist on stage as I sang Anita Baker’s Angel. That guy eventually became my husband.

Together, he and I built a home recording studio where we spent countless hours creating. Initially, my desire was to become an R&B artist, but it wouldn’t be long before requests began rolling in from friends and churches to produce radio ads for local Gospel stage plays, and to compose instrumentals for choirs. This would remind me of the days of my youth – bringing in drummers, keyboardists, bassists, guitarists, and the occasional brass instrument, while working with writers and singers to produce a magnificent record. This is what I was made to do. The appeal to be behind the mic and in front of the crowd vanished, as my sights were set to working in the background – constructing. The lost passion toward my first love had been rekindled.

Although I spent several years producing music as a hobby in my basement, the time had come for me to commit and take my knowledge to the next level. Today, I’m extremely proud to have recently earned my Bachelor’s degree in Music Production at Full Sail University – one of the top Audio/Music Production schools in the nation. Graduating with

a 4.0 GPA, my eagerness and diligence in the accelerated program paid off by stretching my creativity and abilities in so many ways. Not only do I love Gospel music, I also enjoy other genres and aspects of music; such as game music composition, music cues for television, scores for film, and arranging. This experience has been rewarding, as it has made me a better songwriter and composer.
